The purpose of this article is to dispel the myths, misinformation, and confusion induced largely by members of the media and others who are not too knowledgeable in this field. There are many factors to consider and the efficiency of the product (and whether or not it works) is going to depend on it. Also, the tools & materials needed to build something, with some quality, can be costly. I have read several articles from supposedly authoritative, professional, intelligent people who were claiming that these devices don't work. After reviewing their test procedures, it came as no surprise to me that they got negative results. The electrolysis (disassociation of water) process occurs when you apply about 2 volts to water but the device simply does not produce enough hydrogen to run a vehicle on it's own but can increase mileage significantly and, with gas prices nowadays, is a big plus. Adding an electrolyte to the water (such as potassium hydroxide) does increase hydrogen production but also increases amperage and generates heat as a result. Also, pulsed dc. is actually more efficient than straight dc. from your cars' battery.

A device called an EFIE (electronic fuel injection enhancer) should also be used as this compensates for the added oxygen in your intake. Your oxygen sensors monitors and sends a small voltage to your cars' computer telling it whether your a/f ratio is too rich or too lean. The EFIE sends a floating voltage on top of this telling your cars' computer that your a/f ratio is too rich and subsequently cuts back on the gas to your fuel injector.

Hydrogen has a lower ignition rate than gasoline which means that it ignites at a lower temperature so it is quite easy to burn hydrogen in a combustion engine. However, hydrogen also has a lower density rate than gasoline which means that it takes a lot of it to run a vehicle. Running a vehicle without gasoline (such as what Stan Meyer did) involves changing the state of the hydrogen to a higher energy state because of its low density. This gets complicated and involves some physics which I will not get into here.

Service Your Own Car

The benefit of servicing your own car is to save money, and let's face it in today's current climate of rising fuel and garage costs we can all save money by carrying out some basic servicing essentials. The following basic guide has step by step instructions that will give you the information on how to give your car a basic engine service including oil change, oil filter, fuel filter and spark plugs.

Please note that the following is meant as a guide for the standard petrol engine only and therefore should not be relied upon as fact as all vehicle manufactures differ.

Equipment Required

• Oil-drain plug spanner / suitable tool.

• Oil-filter pliers / suitable tool.

• Spark plug spanner / deep socket with extension bar and ratchet.

• Jack and axle stands.

• Oil drain pan.

• Clean rags.

• Safety gloves.

Oil & Oil Filter Change

The engine needs to be warm before starting these procedures as this will allow the oil to drain more freely.

1. Raise the front of the car with the use of a jack and then support with axle stands.

2. Using an oil drain plug spanner or a suitable tool, loosen the oil drain plug at the bottom of the sump and using an oil drain plug spanner or suitable tool slacken the plug approximately half a turn.

3. Position an oil pan directly under the drain plug and remove drain plug allowing the oil to run, be aware that it may take some time for the oil to drain completely.

4. Clean the drain plug and sump using a clean rag then refit the drain plug securely, ideally fit a new sealing washer before refitting plug.

5. Move the oil pan and position it under the oil filter.

6. Using oil filter pliers or a suitable tool loosen the oil filter then unscrew it by hand and empty the oil into your oil pan.

7. Wipe away all oil from engine-filter area with a clean rag.

8. Apply a light coating of clean engine oil to the new filters seal and screw into place firmly by hand.

9. Once you have removed everything from under your vehicle lower the vehicle to the ground.

10. Unscrew the oil filler cap positioned on top of the engine and pour in the specified grade of oil for your vehicle. Continue to do this until oil reaches the top mark on your oil dip stick and refit filler cap.

11. Start engine and allow it to idle for a couple of minutes.

12. Turn off engine and check for any leaks, allow the engine oil to settle for a few minutes then check the oil level at the dipstick again and top up as required.

Changing the Fuel Filter

The position for the Fuel filter vary on most cars however the most usual places are in the engine bay or under the vehicle usually close to the fuel tank.

1. Remove the strap that holds the filter in its position.

2. Look for the direction of an arrow on the filter (when available) and disconnect the fuel lines / hoses from filter and remove (please note that fuel may be spilt on removal). Prior to removing the fuel lines you will need to block the fuel lines using a small pair of mole grips or something similar.

3. Put the new filter into place and refit fuel lines / hoses.

4. Refit fuel filter into its original position securely fastening it back.

5. Start engine and check for any leaks, don't be disheartened if it doesn't start first time as the fuel takes time to circulate initially.

Changing the Air Filter

1. Disconnect all vacuum and breather hose pipes from the air filters housing.

2. Remove all retaining clips and open filter housing.

3. Remove the filter.

4. Fit the new air filter into its housing ensuring that it sits in its correct positions.

5. Refit the filter housing and securely tighten using the original screws or clips.

6. Reconnect all vacuum and breather hose pipes back up to the air filters housing.

Changing the Spark Plugs

It may be necessary to remove other parts to enable you to gain access to the spark plugs. Refer to your owner's manual if unsure and always change spark plugs one at a time.

1. Clean the immediate area around the spark plugs clean using a clean rag.

2. Remove the spark plugs (HT) lead.

3. Carefully remove the spark plug using a spark plug spanner or deep socket with extension bar and ratchet.

4. Carefully fit the new spark plug ensuring that it is securely tightened.

5. Refit (HT) lead making sure you have made a good contact / connection.

6. Repeat the above steps for each individual spark plug until complete.

Troubleshooting Ignition Misfires

Diagnosing and correcting a misfire that develops on the track can be far more frustrating than trying to figure out why a car will not start. There are, however, some similarities between trying to determine the cause of a miss and why a car will not start.

Troubleshooting misfires can be nerve wracking. Is it really ignition related or is it a fuel problem causing the misfire?It may be caused by a mechanical problem within the engine or even a cooling system problem. Other than mentioning the need to check for a blown or leaking head gasket and a bad or low-pressure radiator cap, we will not dwell on the engine internals. However, cooling system problems are responsible for over 20 percent of "ignition problems."

Fuel system problems are more often than not attributed to ignition problems. Before delving too deeply into the ignition, rule out any basic fuel system maladies: A fuel pressure gauge will identify a weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or collapsed fuel line. A warped carburetor base, worn throttle shaft, or other vacuum leaks will show up as a lean condition. A clogged main jet may pass a visual inspection if it is blocked by a piece of sand or clear plastic. If in doubt, use a piece of thin wire to make sure that the jet is not clogged. A blown power valve should be obvious from an overly rich exhaust.

In the early days of the automobile, good wire insulation was poor at best. Some early engines even used bare metal for spark plug "wire." In those early times, simplicity was the norm and wires were routed as neatly as railroad tracks. Today, wiring has become more complex. Insulation quality has improved many times over, allowing wires to be bundled and be more tightly routed. Unfortunately, high voltage and high impulse carrying wires are bundled with signal wires that carry pulses that are affected by high voltage much the same as a compact car is buffeted by a tractor-trailer on the highway. Critical signals are corrupted or lost. This can result in a misfire.

A short checklist will help in determining the source of the problem:

· Using solid-core spark plug wires, including the coil wire, can induce an unwanted signal into the ignition amplifier, causing the amplifier to trigger at the wrong time.

· Poor connections on either end of coil and / or spark plug wires may cause a misfire.

· Bad crimps or connectors not seating on the plug or in the coil can both cause problems.

· Sometimes, a little moisture inside the plug wire boot turns to steam and blows the wire off. A thin film of oil will reduce corona and will help the moisture to escape.

· Spark plug wires must be separated. If possible, do not run them parallel to each other.

· In rare instances, having the coil mounted too close to the amplifier can cause problems.

· Do not run the coil secondary wire through the firewall with the distributor leads or the alternator lead as this can cause erratic operation due to "noise bleed over."

· A weak ignition can cause a misfire, reduced power, or poor performance. This may be the result of a low battery or a malfunctioning alternator.

· Poor power connections, or wires and connectors that are too small can reduce ignition output.

· A master switch not rated for the application can restrict current flow enough to cause poor operation.

· Weak or damaged ignition components may work satisfactorily with a well-charged battery and cool conditions, but when the battery loses its surface charge or the box heats up, misfiring will occur. Low voltage and higher temperatures both require the ignition to work harder.

· Parts store switches might work well for a 10-amp blower or a 100-watt light but the ignition switch on current racecars may need less than 100 milliamps. This small amount of current may not burn through a thin film of moisture or across an oxidized set of contacts. Quality switches are a better and more reliable choice. A Mil-Spec number on a switch gives you, or the supplier, a reference where you can check and compare the qualities and capabilities of a given switch. Make sure that the switch you have chosen or are using will work well in your application. A $5 parts store switch may work most of the time, but do you use supermarket motor oil in your race engine?

Misfire or Stumble

A voltmeter in the dash of the car helps you or the driver diagnose a problem. It can alert the driver to a malfunction before it develops into a misfire. If the alternator quits, proper power management may allow you to finish the race with all electrical power coming from the battery. To accomplish this, all non-essential electrical consumption needs to be curtailed as soon as possible after the alternator quits. If the tach starts jumping, or the car starts missing, it probably too late to start a meaningful conservation of power. How the engine acts, combined with when and where on the track the engine skips, misses, or flattens out are all factors that may be used to diagnose problems.

Some factors to consider when determining the cause of a load or RPM induced misfire:

What is the battery voltage when the problem occurs? Twelve volts or less? Or between 13.5 to 14.5 volts? A12-v misfire normally indicates a lack of reserve power. To remedy this type of problem, you can reduce the spark plug gap, retard the timing, and install an alternator or 16-volt battery.

A misfire at 14.5-volt is a little bit more complex. Does the tach fluctuate or get erratic? Does the problem occur early in the race or practice, or is it always after the midpoint in the race?

Always have a box and coil known to be good, along with an emergency or test harness and a direct coil-to-distributor wire available. If, after changing these components, the problem does not go away, look for a bad ground or a battery problem. Which way do the plates in the battery face? They should be aligned from left to right to prevent shorting in the turns due to centrifugal force. Where on the track does the problem occur? Diving into a turn? Off the turn or midway down the straight?

If a problem develops over time (10 or more laps), replacing components may "fix" the problem until everything heats up or the battery loses its surface charge. Tachometer operation may indicate the source of an ignition problem. An erratic tachometer reading or a zero reading may indicate a loose connection or low battery voltage.

How to Service a Vehicle's Hydraulic System

Vehicle Hydraulic System service is relatively uncomplicated, but it is vital to the vehicle's safe operation.

Brake Fluid Inspection

The master cylinder is usually located under the hood and near the fire wall on the driver's side. Remove the cover and check the gasket, or diaphragm. Inspect the cover for damage or plugged vent holes. Clean the vent holes, if necessary.

Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder. A cast-iron reservoir is usually filled to within 1/4 inch of the top. A plastic reservoir may have fluid level mars. Do not overfill a reservoir. If fluid must be added, a leak probably has developed or the shoes and/or pads are worn. Check the system carefully to locate the leak.

To check for contaminated fluid, place a small amount of brake fluid in a clear glass jar. If the fluid is dirty or separates into layers, it is contaminated. Contaminated fluid must be replaced.

Contaminated brake fluid can damage rubber parts and cause leaks. When replacing contaminated brake fluid, it is necessary to flush and refill the brake system with new fluid. Always use fluid with a DOT rating of 3 or higher. Follow manufacturer's recommendations.

Check the master cylinder for dampness and leaks around the body fittings, especially at the rear. A leak where it is mounted to the fire wall or power brake unit indicate a defective rear piston seal. The master cylinder must be rebuilt or replaced.

Brake Line Inspection Check all tubing, hoses, and connections from under the hood to the wheels for leaks and damage. Wheels and tires should also be inspected for signs of brake fluid leaks. Check all hoses for flexibility, bulges, and cracks. Check parking brake linkage, cable and connections for damage and wear. Replace parts where necessary.

Brake Pedal Inspection Depress and release the brake pedal several times (engine running for power brakes). Check for friction and noise. Pedal movement should be smooth, with no squeaks from the pedal or brakes. The pedal should return quickly when it is released.

When operating the engine, be sure the transmission lever is in neutral or park. Be sure the area is properly ventilated for the exhaust to escape.

Apply heavy foot pressure to the brake pedal (engine running for power brakes). Check for a spongy pedal and pedal reserve. Spongy pedal action is springy. Pedal action should feel trim. Pedal reserve is the distance between the brake pedal and the floor after the pedal has been depressed fully. The pedal should not go lower than 1 or 2 inches above the floor.

With the engine off, hold light foot pressure on the pedal for about 15 seconds. There should be no pedal movement during this time. Pedal movement indicated a leak. Repeat the procedure using heavy pedal pressure (engine running for power brakes).

If there is pedal movement, but the fluid level is not low, the master cylinder has internal leakage. It must be rebuilt or replaced. If the fluid level is low, there is an external leak somewhere in the brake system. The leak must be repaired.

Depress the pedal and check for proper stop light operation.

To check power brake operation, depress and release the pedal several times while the engine is stopped. This eliminates vacuum from the system. Hold the brake down with moderate foot pressure and start the engine. IF the power unit is operating properly, the brake pedal moves downward when the engine is started.

When it comes to used cars, it's often the small problems that are left unchecked which end up costing the most money. Unfortunately, given enough time, they can require repairs that often cost thousands of dollars. Most drivers can avoid expensive car repairs simply by addressing issues as they occur. Below, I'll describe a few common problems and how to resolve them.

The Wrong Gas

Drivers fill their gas tanks with the wrong type of fuel more often than you might think. For example, they'll put diesel gas in when they should be using unleaded (or vice versa). It's an innocent mistake, but it can cause severe damage. If you fill your tank with the wrong gas and recognize the mistake immediately, don't start your engine. Doing so will circulate the gas throughout your car, potentially damaging parts in the process.

Instead, have your car towed to the nearest mechanic. He'll be able to drain the gas tank of the wrong fuel. The drain may cost a few hundred dollars, but it's better than having to pay thousands to repair or replace expensive parts.

Bad Water Pump

Your car's water pump will likely develop a leak at some point. When it does, you should replace it as soon as possible. A lot of drivers fail to do so and as a result, their car's engine ends up overheating. The problem is that an overheated engine can cause the head gasket to blow or rupture. While a blown gasket may sound benign, it usually requires that substantial repair work be performed on the engine.

Replacing the water pump may only cost a few hundred dollars (including the labor). By contrast, replacing the head gasket can carry a price tag of over $2,000. Address the problem early and you'll save money in the long run.

Low Oil

The motor oil that you put in your car lubricates the parts during combustion. If your car runs out of oil, that lubrication deteriorates. When that happens, the parts grind together and heat builds, eventually causing your car to die. At that point, adding oil might not do much good because your engine is likely damaged and may even need to be replaced. Aside from running your car off a steep cliff, allowing the oil levels to decline is one of the most damaging things you can do.

There have been some reports on the internet about a truck hydrogen generator device used to improve a vehicle fuel mileage. This kind of information has generated a lot of attention because people are hungry for solution to reduce gasoline expenses. The whole event was caused by rising global crude oil prices hence pushing local gasoline prices to a new height. Trucks owners are affected more by rising fuel prices because trucks usually burn more fuel due to its large engine capacity and heavy chassis. Maintaining the Peak Performance of Your Car's Battery

For those of you who are first time DIYs, the battery is one of the integral components of your car; it is rechargeable and is the power source of the ignition system and other electrical devices in your car.

Initially there's the maintenance free and low-maintenance types to choose from. A maintenance free battery is sealed and will not require replenishing the battery fluids over a long period of time while the low-maintenance type requires constant check up and replenishing once a drop in battery fluid levels can be seen. Battery fluid (Alkaline) can easily be bought at local gas stations and car yards or you can use distilled water as a substitute.

In layman's terms the battery is the heart of your car but is often times the most neglected simply because nowadays it's bought "maintenance free."

Recent trends and technological advancements have made maintenance free batteries a standard on every vehicle out in the market today.

Don't get the impression that since you've read on the label that it's maintenance free, you will just simply put it in its place and forget about it. Your car's battery is not entirely that. Just like any other sensitive equipment of your car, it also requires your constant care and attention for it to function well.

Here are the basic maintenance tips that will certainly save you a lot of trouble and will not leave you clueless by the roadside while on a very important trip.

As a rule before doing maintenance checks, always see to it to disconnect the clamps off the terminals to avoid untoward injuries from shock.

Make sure that the battery is placed securely in its place. If your battery is equipped with a hold down bar, be sure to replace it.

5. Lubricate the terminals

With a lubricant (Petroleum jelly) place a small dab on the terminals. This will keep your cables clean and free of corrosion longer, while making it easier for you to put the cables back on the battery terminal.

6. Change your battery

Change your battery at the maximum of 3 to 3.5 years or after reaching the warranty period. For accidental battery drain (Such as leaving the lights on or stereo on) a lot of auto technicians would just recommend re-charging.
